Faithful in Either Place

Philippians 4:12-13  (12)I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound.  In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.  (13)I can do all things through him who strengthens me.(ESV)

Most of us spend far more time trying to change our circumstances than considering who we’re becoming within them.

We want to reach the mountain, escape the valley, preserve the good season, and shorten the painful one.  We measure progress by elevation.  If life feels easier, clearer, or more successful, we assume we’re moving in the right direction.

But faithfulness isn’t measured by terrain.

Paul learned how to live with abundance and with need.  His confidence wasn’t built upon the expectation that every difficult season would quickly improve.  It was built upon Christ, who remained sufficient when everything else changed.

That’s the deeper lesson of mountains and valleys.

The mountain may give us perspective, but perspective must become obedience.

The valley may expose weakness, but weakness can be brought honestly before God.

One season may call us to receive.  Another may call us to endure.  One may reveal where God is leading.  Another may test whether we will continue following when we can’t see the destination.

Neither place excuses unfaithfulness.

Success doesn’t give us permission to become proud, careless, or independent.  Suffering doesn’t give us permission to become bitter, dishonest, or cruel.  Different terrain may present different temptations, but the call remains the same.

Trust God.  Obey what He’s shown you.  Remain humble.  Love the people around you.  Take the next faithful step.

We won’t remain on every mountain, and no valley lasts forever.  The path will rise and fall many times throughout our lives.

The goal isn’t to find a place where faith is never tested.

The goal is to become the kind of person who remains faithful wherever the path leads.

We may prefer the mountain.  We may fear the valley.  But God isn’t limited by either one.

He’s the God of both places.

And wherever He leads, He is still worthy of being followed.

Who am I?

I’ve walked a path I didn’t ask for, guided by a God I can’t ignore. I don’t wear titles well—writer, teacher, leader—they fit like borrowed armor. But I know this: I’ve bled truth onto a page, challenged what I was told to swallow, and led only because I refused to follow where I couldn’t see Christ.

I don’t see greatness in the mirror. I see someone ordinary, shaped by pain and made resilient through it. I’m not above anyone. I’m not below anyone. I’m just trying to live what I believe and document the war inside so others know they aren’t alone.

If you’re looking for polished answers, you won’t find them here.
But if you’re looking for honesty, tension, paradox, and a relentless pursuit of truth,
you’re in the right place.

If you’re unsure of what path to follow or disillusioned with the world today and are willing to walk with me along this path I follow, you’ll never be alone. Everyone is welcome and invited to participate as much as they feel comfortable with.

Now, welcome home. I’m Don.
