Where Are You?

Genesis 3:9  But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”(ESV)

God’s first question to Adam after the fall wasn’t a request for geographical information.  God knew exactly where Adam was hiding.

Adam also knew where he was physically.  He was among the trees, attempting to conceal himself.  Yet his physical location was only one small part of his actual position.

He was afraid.  He was ashamed.  He was separated from the openness he’d previously shared with God.  He’d disobeyed, and he was already trying to explain his condition without fully admitting how he had arrived there.

That’s the difficulty hidden inside the question, “Where are you?”

We usually know at least part of the answer.  We know what happened yesterday.  We know which relationships are strained.  We know which responsibilities are waiting.  We know what hurts, what failed, or what suddenly changed.

But knowing the visible facts doesn’t mean we fully understand our position.

We may accurately recognize that we’re exhausted while failing to recognize that we’re also bitter.  We may know that we feel trapped while overlooking the choices that continue to hold us there.  We may recognize the damage someone else caused while remaining unaware of how that damage has begun shaping our own behavior.

Our understanding of “here” can be beautifully accurate in one direction and dangerously incomplete in another.

God’s question invites more than a location report.  It calls us to step out from behind whatever we’re using as cover and honestly examine where we stand before Him.

This doesn’t require us to understand everything at once.  Adam didn’t suddenly comprehend every consequence of the fall.  He only needed to stop hiding long enough to answer.

Before we ask where we should go next, we must begin with what’s already visible.

Where are we physically?
Where are we emotionally?
Where are we relationally?
Where are we spiritually?
What do we know, and what have we only assumed?

The first step forward is often not movement at all.

It’s telling the truth about where we are.

When we’re feeling stuck in whatever situation we’re in, usually not favorable to us, maybe this is part of the problem…

“The first step forward is often not movement at all. It’s telling the truth about where we are.”

…at least admitting to ourselves and Abba about where we actually are mentally.

I know for me, sometimes, I live and act like I’m where I want to be instead of where I actually am. This is why it is so vital for me to feed myself with the Word and with the testimony of other brothers and sisters to help hold the mirror up to truly see myself.

Amen, brother. I think that most people forget to take off the tinted glasses to take a real and very stark/honest look at where they are. They’d prefer to see things how they want them to be instead of how they really are.

There is a lot more beauty in how things really are. It’s just so much easier to pretend that we’ve already done the work to get from where we are to where we want to be.

Who am I?

I’ve walked a path I didn’t ask for, guided by a God I can’t ignore. I don’t wear titles well—writer, teacher, leader—they fit like borrowed armor. But I know this: I’ve bled truth onto a page, challenged what I was told to swallow, and led only because I refused to follow where I couldn’t see Christ.

I don’t see greatness in the mirror. I see someone ordinary, shaped by pain and made resilient through it. I’m not above anyone. I’m not below anyone. I’m just trying to live what I believe and document the war inside so others know they aren’t alone.

If you’re looking for polished answers, you won’t find them here.
But if you’re looking for honesty, tension, paradox, and a relentless pursuit of truth,
you’re in the right place.

If you’re unsure of what path to follow or disillusioned with the world today and are willing to walk with me along this path I follow, you’ll never be alone. Everyone is welcome and invited to participate as much as they feel comfortable with.

Now, welcome home. I’m Don.
