Where Have You Come From?

Genesis 16:8  And he said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?”  She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai.”(ESV)

Hagar was moving, but movement didn’t mean she understood her direction.

She knew what she was leaving.  She was fleeing from Sarai, from mistreatment, and from a situation she no longer believed she could endure.

That knowledge mattered.

Before we can understand where we’re going, we often need to understand where we’ve come from.

The path behind us carries information.  It reveals the choices we made, the pressures we faced, the habits we formed, the wounds we carried, and the moments when God preserved us even though we didn’t recognize it at the time.

Looking backward isn’t the same as living backward.

The goal isn’t to remain trapped in regret or nostalgia.  It’s to identify what’s shaped our present position.

Sometimes we discover that we’ve been running from pain rather than moving toward healing.  Sometimes we realize that a pattern we blamed on circumstances has followed us through several different seasons.  Sometimes we see that what felt like wandering was actually a path God used to prepare us.

We may also discover that we’ve come farther than we thought.

The person asking, “Where do I go from here?” may be standing in a place they once believed they would never reach.  Fatigue can make progress difficult to see, especially when the destination remains unclear.

The road behind us doesn’t determine every step ahead, but it helps explain our current position.

What have we left?

What have we carried with us?

What have we learned?

What keeps repeating?

Where has God already been faithful?

We can’t change where we’ve come from.

But we can tell the truth about it, learn from it, and refuse to let an unexamined past quietly choose our next direction.

Who am I?

I’ve walked a path I didn’t ask for, guided by a God I can’t ignore. I don’t wear titles well—writer, teacher, leader—they fit like borrowed armor. But I know this: I’ve bled truth onto a page, challenged what I was told to swallow, and led only because I refused to follow where I couldn’t see Christ.

I don’t see greatness in the mirror. I see someone ordinary, shaped by pain and made resilient through it. I’m not above anyone. I’m not below anyone. I’m just trying to live what I believe and document the war inside so others know they aren’t alone.

If you’re looking for polished answers, you won’t find them here.
But if you’re looking for honesty, tension, paradox, and a relentless pursuit of truth,
you’re in the right place.

If you’re unsure of what path to follow or disillusioned with the world today and are willing to walk with me along this path I follow, you’ll never be alone. Everyone is welcome and invited to participate as much as they feel comfortable with.

Now, welcome home. I’m Don.
