⚓ Floatie: Crowned, Not Self-Created
Psalm 8:4–6 (4)what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? 5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. (6)You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet,(ESV)
Dignity Is Bestowed, Not Engineered
Psalm 8 does something dangerous to modern pride. It places humanity between dust and glory.
“Made a little lower…” “Crowned with glory and honor…” Both are true.
We are crowned — which means dignity is real. We are lower — which means dignity is received.
Transhumanism doesn’t begin by denying dignity. It often begins by amplifying it. It says, “You are capable of more.” And that’s true. Humanity has always been capable of more than it thought.
But there’s a difference between being crowned and crowning ourselves.
The crown in Psalm 8 is placed by God. It isn’t fabricated by innovation.
The moment ability becomes identity, we stop receiving glory and start manufacturing it. That’s the shift.
✒️ Forge: Capability Is Not Ontology
What You Can Do Is Not What You Are
Capability has always tempted humanity to confuse function with essence.
When someone runs faster, lifts more, calculates quicker, lives longer, sees further — we instinctively admire it. There’s nothing wrong with admiration.
The problem begins when ability redefines worth.
If someone can think at enhanced speed, are they more human? If someone can process more data, are they more valuable? If someone extends lifespan dramatically, are they superior?
These questions don’t sound hostile. They sound practical.
But beneath them sits an assumption: Output measures identity.
Genesis 2 grounds humanity differently.
Genesis 2:7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.(ESV)
Life didn’t originate from capacity. It originated from breath. That breath wasn’t earned. It was given.
If breath defines humanity, then dignity precedes performance. Once that order is reversed, identity becomes scalable. And scalable identity creates hierarchy.
⚒️ Anvil: The Quiet Stratification
When Enhancement Becomes Expectation
At first, augmentation will be assistance. Then it will become advantage. Eventually, it will become expectation.
The progression is predictable.
When enhancement improves productivity, institutions will incentivize it. When enhancement increases safety, industries will recommend it. When enhancement sharpens cognition, education will explore it.
None of that requires malice. It only requires efficiency.
But once expectation replaces option, neutrality disappears. The unenhanced won’t just be different. They’ll be disadvantaged.
And in performance-driven systems, disadvantage is rarely tolerated long-term.
James 2:1 warns against partiality. “My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith…”(ESV)
Partiality in Scripture was often economic or social. In a transhuman context, it could become biological.
If dignity becomes tethered to enhancement, the imago Dei is no longer equal across bodies.
That’s the danger. Not stronger legs. Not sharper minds. A hierarchy of humanity.
🔥 Ember: Strength Without Contempt
You can lift more than you used to. You worked for it. You disciplined your body. You earned your progress through effort.
But you don’t look down on the one still learning form. That’s what keeps strength healthy.
Now imagine a culture where enhancement bypasses process.
Where strength is purchased. Where cognition is upgraded. Where speed is installed.
The temptation won’t just be pride. It will be comparison. And comparison always trends toward contempt.
Luke 18:11 records a prayer soaked in it. “God, I thank you that I am not like other men…”(ESV)
Contempt isn’t loud at first. It sounds like gratitude for advantage.
If augmented humanity ever begins to say, “Thank God we are not like the natural,” humility has already eroded.
Romans 12:3 cautions us: “…not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think…”(ESV)
Technology doesn’t remove that command. It intensifies it.
🌿 Covenant Triumph: Identity Before Ability
The believer must settle something before the culture forces it. You are not defined by capacity.
Not by speed. Not by strength. Not by cognition. Not by longevity.
You are defined by breath and by covenant.
Enhancement may extend function. It must never redefine essence.
If you can run faster, run with gratitude. If you can think sharper, think with humility. If you can live longer, live in dependence.
But never allow ability to become identity.
Because once identity scales with performance, equality collapses. And once equality collapses, contempt is only a matter of time.
Remain crowned — not self-created. The crown was given. Don’t try to forge your own.
