Forged by the Word, Part 3:  Eyes to See, Ears to Hear

Deuteronomy 29:4  But to this day the Lord has not given you a heart to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear.(ESV)

Floatie:  Sight Isn’t Vision
You can read every word of the Bible and still miss the voice of God.  Sight is not the same as vision.  Hearing is not the same as listening.  Revelation is not academic—it’s a gift.  One that must be asked for, waited on, and honored.

✒️ Forge:  Revelation Is Given, Not Grabbed
Moses told the Israelites that after all the signs and wonders, they still lacked what mattered most:  spiritual perception.  Jesus echoed this warning in Matthew 13 when He was quoting Isaiah.

Matthew 13:13–15  (13)This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.  (14)Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says:  “‘“You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive.”  (15)For this people’s heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.’(ESV)

Paul builds on this in 1 Corinthians 2.

1 Corinthians 2:14  The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.(ESV)

This isn’t about intellect or effort.  It’s about posture.  God grants clarity to the humble and hides it from the proud.  If the Word is closed to you, it may be that your heart is closed first.

⚒️ Anvil:  The Posture of the Listener
Reflect deeply:

  • Do I come to Scripture to meet God—or to master information?
  • Am I willing to wait in the silence when the Word does not immediately speak?
  • Have I ever asked God for eyes to see and ears to hear?

True reading begins when self-confidence ends.  The Spirit is not impressed with your theology degree.  He draws near to the desperate, not the clever.  And He often hides truth from those who presume they already have it.

🔥 Ember:  Humility Unlocks Revelation
You may be blind to the most important truths in Scripture not because you’re lazy, but because you’re proud.

Humility is the key that unlocks revelation.  Some of the greatest treasures in the Word are buried behind silence, and only the brokenhearted wait long enough to hear them.

God is not hiding from you.  But He will not reveal Himself to a heart that is already full of itself.

🌿 Covenant Triumph:  The Gift of Sight
The same God who withholds sight can give it in an instant.  Jesus opened the eyes of the blind and the ears of the deaf—not just physically, but spiritually.  If you ask, seek, and knock, He will answer.

You were not meant to skim sacred words.  You were meant to behold them.  So ask.  Wait.  Listen.

He’s still speaking.

Who am I?

I’ve walked a path I didn’t ask for, guided by a God I can’t ignore. I don’t wear titles well—writer, teacher, leader—they fit like borrowed armor. But I know this: I’ve bled truth onto a page, challenged what I was told to swallow, and led only because I refused to follow where I couldn’t see Christ.

I don’t see greatness in the mirror. I see someone ordinary, shaped by pain and made resilient through it. I’m not above anyone. I’m not below anyone. I’m just trying to live what I believe and document the war inside so others know they aren’t alone.

If you’re looking for polished answers, you won’t find them here.
But if you’re looking for honesty, tension, paradox, and a relentless pursuit of truth,
you’re in the right place.

If you’re unsure of what path to follow or disillusioned with the world today and are willing to walk with me along this path I follow, you’ll never be alone. Everyone is welcome and invited to participate as much as they feel comfortable with.

Now, welcome home. I’m Don.
