Shared Experience

Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.(ESV)

Describing locations and experiences can be strikingly similar. The more broad the description, the more people are likely to understand and associate with the description. As we get more specific, the number of people who can say that they have been there decreases until very few, if any, of the people you’re talking to get the reference. If I talk about salvation in a very broad sense, most Christians absolutely know what I’m talking about. If I drill down into the finer details of my personal experience then the number of people who can truly say they have seen what I’m describing is very limited. If I say that I was born on earth, every human being in the history of this planet can say the same thing. If I speak about an experience I had with an angel or a conversation with God and how that went, then that was just for me.

People build and strengthen connections and relationships through shared experiences. People who have served and seen combat can speak with other combat veterans, regardless of generation or campaign, in ways that people who have not served never could. The way we build connections should make Jesus the absolute best connection that any of us ever find, but for some reason, many want to reject that connection. Jesus has been there. Jesus can see all of those hidden things. While He does not experience many things in the same way that we do, He is still able to understand and truly sympathize with us through the trials we face and even the consequences of our actions or choices. He knows us better than we know ourselves. Perhaps, this is what scares many about opening that door. The lies of the enemy are more comfortable than the truth.

Who am I?

I’ve walked a path I didn’t ask for, guided by a God I can’t ignore. I don’t wear titles well—writer, teacher, leader—they fit like borrowed armor. But I know this: I’ve bled truth onto a page, challenged what I was told to swallow, and led only because I refused to follow where I couldn’t see Christ.

I don’t see greatness in the mirror. I see someone ordinary, shaped by pain and made resilient through it. I’m not above anyone. I’m not below anyone. I’m just trying to live what I believe and document the war inside so others know they aren’t alone.

If you’re looking for polished answers, you won’t find them here.
But if you’re looking for honesty, tension, paradox, and a relentless pursuit of truth,
you’re in the right place.

If you’re unsure of what path to follow or disillusioned with the world today and are willing to walk with me along this path I follow, you’ll never be alone. Everyone is welcome and invited to participate as much as they feel comfortable with.

Now, welcome home. I’m Don.
