Obedience Over Approval

Floatie:  We Must Obey God

Acts 5:27–32  (27)And when they had brought them, they set them before the council.  And the high priest questioned them, (28)saying, “We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.”  (29)But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.  (30)The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree.  (31)God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.  (32)And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”(ESV)

✒️ Forge:  The Higher Authority

The council wielded earthly power, but the apostles stood under heavenly command.  Their words echo Jesus’ teaching:  “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.  Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28)(ESV).

They root their testimony in three pillars:

The phrase “hung on a tree” recalls Deuteronomy 21:23, where the cursed one is displayed on a tree.  Peter insists:  the One cursed has now become Savior.

⚒️ Anvil:  The Challenge of Costly Obedience

Obeying God rather than men sounds noble until it costs us.  For the apostles, it meant flogging, imprisonment, and eventual martyrdom.  For us, it may mean ridicule, exclusion, or loss of opportunity.

Yet partial obedience is disobedience.  Samuel told Saul:  “To obey is better than sacrifice” (1 Samuel 15:22)(ESV).  When God’s Word and human pressure collide, there is no middle ground.

🔥 Ember:  A Word for Today

The church does not thrive when it seeks cultural approval.  It thrives when it bears bold witness, even under threat.  The Spirit is given to those who obey—not those who negotiate obedience down to what feels safe.

🌿 Covenant Triumph:  The Witness of Spirit and Bride

The apostles declared:  “We are witnesses… and so is the Holy Spirit.”  Even now, the Spirit joins with the Church to testify:  Jesus is risen, exalted, and Savior.  This covenant witness is unstoppable because it is not ours alone—it is God Himself speaking through us.

Who am I?

I’ve walked a path I didn’t ask for, guided by a God I can’t ignore. I don’t wear titles well—writer, teacher, leader—they fit like borrowed armor. But I know this: I’ve bled truth onto a page, challenged what I was told to swallow, and led only because I refused to follow where I couldn’t see Christ.

I don’t see greatness in the mirror. I see someone ordinary, shaped by pain and made resilient through it. I’m not above anyone. I’m not below anyone. I’m just trying to live what I believe and document the war inside so others know they aren’t alone.

If you’re looking for polished answers, you won’t find them here.
But if you’re looking for honesty, tension, paradox, and a relentless pursuit of truth,
you’re in the right place.

If you’re unsure of what path to follow or disillusioned with the world today and are willing to walk with me along this path I follow, you’ll never be alone. Everyone is welcome and invited to participate as much as they feel comfortable with.

Now, welcome home. I’m Don.
