⚓ Floatie: Apostolic Foundations
Acts 1:21–26 (21)“So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, (22)beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.” (23)And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. (24)And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen (25)to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” (26)And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.(ESV)
✒️ Forge: God Chooses the Witnesses
The requirement for apostleship was not fame, charisma, or ambition—it was faithfulness. The chosen man had to have walked with Jesus from John’s baptism to the ascension and had to be a direct witness to the resurrection. Authority in the Church is not manufactured by men but given by God through testimony.
Scripture reinforces this pattern:
- The law required two or three witnesses to establish any matter (Deuteronomy 19:15).
- Jesus told His disciples they would be witnesses of these things (Luke 24:48).
- Paul later wrote that the apostles and prophets were the foundation of the household of God, with Christ as the cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20).
The apostles prayed before acting, acknowledging that the Lord alone knows the heart. Casting lots may seem mechanical, but it was the accepted way of discerning God’s will in the Old Testament: “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD” (Proverbs 16:33).
⚒️ Anvil: The Challenge of Trusting God’s Choice
Judas was chosen by Jesus and still betrayed Him. Matthias was chosen by lot and served faithfully. This is a reminder that outward selection never guarantees inward faithfulness, and human betrayal never cancels God’s plan.
The early church did not replace Judas with anger or revenge but with prayer and submission. How do we handle leadership gaps in our own time? Do we scramble with politics and preferences, or do we seek the Lord’s choice, even if it means humbly casting lots—laying the decision outside of our control?
🔥 Ember: A Word for Today
Matthias is barely mentioned again in Scripture. Does that make his role less important? Not at all. The apostles needed twelve. The twelve tribes of Israel had their counterparts in the twelve apostles of the Lamb (Revelation 21:14). God’s story required Matthias, even if history barely records him. Sometimes the most critical roles are quiet ones.
🌿 Covenant Triumph: The Faithful Witness
The apostles were not inventing something new. They were stepping into a story that had already been written. Twelve men stood as witnesses, testifying that the resurrection was true. And that testimony stands unbroken today. God knows the hearts. He appoints His witnesses. Our task is not to make ourselves known, but to make Him known.
