Promise of Power

Floatie:  You Will Receive Power

Acts 1:6–11  (6)So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”  (7)He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority.  (8)But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”  (9)And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.  (10)And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, (11)and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven?  This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”(ESV)

✒️ Forge:  The Promise and the Pattern

The disciples asked about the kingdom, but Jesus redirected them to the Spirit.  Their eyes were on Israel’s throne, but His promise was power for witness, not political restoration.  This follows a consistent biblical pattern:  God’s people look for immediate rule, while He lays groundwork for eternal reign.

  • Moses looked ahead:  “Would that all the LORD’s people were prophets, that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!” (Numbers 11:29)(ESV).
  • Joel foresaw this day:  “I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh” (Joel 2:28–29)(ESV).
  • Jesus tied it together:  “Behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you.  But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high” (Luke 24:49)(ESV).

The ascension itself also echoed Daniel’s vision:  “Behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man… and to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom” (Daniel 7:13–14)(ESV).

⚒️ Anvil:  The Challenge of Waiting

The disciples wanted timelines.  We want timelines.  But God gives authority, not calendars.  The Spirit empowers, the Son intercedes, and the Father sets the times.  Our task is witness, not speculation.  How often do we stare upward, waiting for Jesus to return, when the angels have already said, “Go. He’ll come back.  Do the work now”?

This isn’t passive waiting.  Jesus gave a Great Commission (Matthew 28:18–20) that pairs with Acts 1:8:  go make disciples, empowered by the Spirit, until the ends of the earth have heard.

🔥 Ember:  A Word for Today

The power promised is not human charisma, cleverness, or brute strength.  It is the same Spirit that hovered over the waters in creation (Genesis 1:2) and raised Christ from the dead (Romans 8:11).  That Spirit dwells in you.  So why do we so often act powerless?

🌿 Covenant Triumph:  From Cloud to Crown

The disciples watched Him rise, but Daniel says the other side of that cloud was a coronation.  He ascended not into absence, but into authority.  He sits enthroned until the day He returns the same way He left.  Until then, His Spirit empowers His people to carry the message of His reign.

Who am I?

I’ve walked a path I didn’t ask for, guided by a God I can’t ignore. I don’t wear titles well—writer, teacher, leader—they fit like borrowed armor. But I know this: I’ve bled truth onto a page, challenged what I was told to swallow, and led only because I refused to follow where I couldn’t see Christ.

I don’t see greatness in the mirror. I see someone ordinary, shaped by pain and made resilient through it. I’m not above anyone. I’m not below anyone. I’m just trying to live what I believe and document the war inside so others know they aren’t alone.

If you’re looking for polished answers, you won’t find them here.
But if you’re looking for honesty, tension, paradox, and a relentless pursuit of truth,
you’re in the right place.

If you’re unsure of what path to follow or disillusioned with the world today and are willing to walk with me along this path I follow, you’ll never be alone. Everyone is welcome and invited to participate as much as they feel comfortable with.

Now, welcome home. I’m Don.
