⚓ Floatie: A Watchman is Called
Ezekiel 3:17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me.(ESV)
Isaiah 62:6 On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent. You who put the Lord in remembrance, take no rest,(ESV)
Romans 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?(ESV)
✒️ Forge: Defining the Role
The call of the watchman is not glamorous. It is not sought after, nor should it be. It is not comfortable. The prophet Ezekiel was pulled into it, not because he asked for it, but because God demanded it. A watchman stands on the wall when others sleep. He sees what others ignore. He bears the responsibility of warning when danger approaches.
This is a role of relentless accountability. If the watchman speaks and the people ignore him, their blood is on their own heads. If the watchman stays silent, or falls asleep at his post, their blood is on his (Ezekiel 33:6). The weight of that truth is unbearable without the Spirit of God.
The pastor comforts. The teacher explains. The shepherd gathers. The watchman warns. His words are often unwelcome, but they are necessary.
⚒️ Anvil: The Burden in Action
To be a watchman today means living with a heightened awareness. Every deaf ear feels like a rejection of God’s mercy. Every blind eye feels like another stone hurled by the enemy. The watchman learns quickly that obedience is not measured in applause but in blood-stained responsibility.
Even other leaders may carry easier loads. A pastor can feed the sheep week after week. A teacher can explain doctrine with patience. But a watchman’s words cut. They pierce. They unsettle. The messages carry eternal consequence.
And yet—the watchman must still rise and speak. Because silence is never safer. Silence is betrayal.
🔥 Ember: The Watchman’s Prayer
Here is the raw cry of a soul who stands on the wall, seeing both the darkness of the enemy and the goodness of God:
Lord, You called me when I was unworthy, and You knew every sin I would stumble into. You knew my weakness before You placed me on this wall. Still You said, “Watch.” Still You said, “Warn.” Still You said, “Speak.”
I do not carry this burden because it is easy. I carry it because You carried me when I was dead in my sins. If I must be cut to the bone to speak truth, let it be by Your hand and not my own. If every word I speak is met with stones, let me remember that they first threw stones at You.
Guard me from myself, O Lord. The enemy’s weapons are powerless against You, but my own flesh is a traitor within the gates. Keep me from falling on my own sword. Break every chain of sin that dulls my eyes, weakens my voice, or tempts me to abandon the wall.
Give me wisdom to see, courage to speak, and patience to endure. May I never confuse silence with peace. May I never confuse comfort with obedience. May I never mistake applause for fruit.
You are my fortress. You are my strong tower. If You are for me, who can be against me? Let the enemy rage, let the stones fly, let the night grow darker—still I will not come down from this wall. Not because I am strong, but because You are faithful.
Amen.
🌿 Covenant Triumph: Hope Beyond the Wall
The role of the watchman is bitter. It carries scars. It feels crushing. But the triumph is not found in the watchman himself—it is found in Christ. Every warning spoken, every soul stirred, every eye opened is evidence that God is still reaching, still saving, still winning.
The wall is not forever. One day, the trumpet will no longer sound warnings but victory. The King will return, and the watchman’s burden will finally fall away. Until then, faithfulness is the measure, not success.
