Of Principalities and Princes

Floatie: Understanding the Enemy’s Chain of Command

Ephesians 6:12  For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.(ESV)

Ephesians 6:12  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.(KJV)

Words change.  Meanings get watered down.  But Scripture hasn’t shifted—we have.  What used to evoke fear and awe has been sanitized by modern translation.  The battle is still raging, but most of the Church doesn’t even know who they’re fighting.

✒️ Forge:  The Language of War

Paul wasn’t using flowery language.  He was issuing a chain-of-command warning.  When he spoke of principalities, powers, and rulers of darkness, he was describing a structured, hierarchical enemy—a kingdom of rebellion.

Let’s walk through it.

1. Principalities (Greek:  archai)

The word “principalities” in the KJV comes from the Greek archē—the same root as “archangel.”  It literally means “first ones” or “chief rulers.”

In Latin, the word princeps means “first” or “leader”—the root of our English word prince.  So when we say principality, we’re not talking about a vague dark force.  We’re talking about territorial rulers—spiritual “princes” operating beneath Satan’s global authority.  This is why Satan is called the “prince of the power of the air” in Ephesians 2:2.

A principality is a delegated dominion.  It’s where the prince rules, but under higher command.

2. Powers (Greek:  exousiai)

This is delegated authority—a legal or positional right to act.  These aren’t brute-force spirits; they are officials in a spiritual bureaucracy.  They can influence governments, cultures, and even churches.  This is spiritual corruption that wears a badge and knows the law.  That’s what makes it so dangerous.

3. Rulers of Darkness

These are the enforcers—the strongmen of the unseen realm.  They traffic in deception, fear, and control.  They oversee darkness in this world, meaning they are embedded in world systems—education, politics, entertainment, religion.  This isn’t allegory.  It’s a tactical playbook.

⚒️ Anvil:  Don’t Misidentify the Battlefield

If you’re still swinging at people, you’re losing.  The Church today is fighting each other while the real enemy operates undetected.
We argue about denominations and politics while spiritual warlords claim territory in our families, our communities, and even our pulpits.

Our King didn’t die so we could shadowbox.
He died so we could reclaim territory—and walk in the authority of the One who conquered the darkness.

You don’t need a new method.  You need new eyesight.

🔥 Ember:  The Crown Belongs to One

I used to think I understood spiritual warfare.  I memorized verses and called it training.  But knowledge without clarity is a false weapon.

It wasn’t until I realized that every principality has limits, every power is on borrowed time, and every ruler will one day kneel—that I finally understood authority.

Calling Satan a “prince” is not a compliment.  It’s a reminder:  he’s not a king.
He answers to the King of kings.  The top of the pyramid isn’t up for grabs.  The throne is taken.
And Jesus?  He’s not worried.

🌿 Covenant Triumph:  He Reigns—Now and Forever

Revelation 19:16  On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.(ESV)

There can only be one King over all other kings.
There can only be one Lord above every spiritual authority.
Every principality, every power, and every ruler of darkness is already under His feet.

We don’t fight for victory.
We fight from it.

Who am I?

I’ve walked a path I didn’t ask for, guided by a God I can’t ignore. I don’t wear titles well—writer, teacher, leader—they fit like borrowed armor. But I know this: I’ve bled truth onto a page, challenged what I was told to swallow, and led only because I refused to follow where I couldn’t see Christ.

I don’t see greatness in the mirror. I see someone ordinary, shaped by pain and made resilient through it. I’m not above anyone. I’m not below anyone. I’m just trying to live what I believe and document the war inside so others know they aren’t alone.

If you’re looking for polished answers, you won’t find them here.
But if you’re looking for honesty, tension, paradox, and a relentless pursuit of truth,
you’re in the right place.

If you’re unsure of what path to follow or disillusioned with the world today and are willing to walk with me along this path I follow, you’ll never be alone. Everyone is welcome and invited to participate as much as they feel comfortable with.

Now, welcome home. I’m Don.
