Mistakes Were Made

Floatie:  The Line We Cross Without Knowing

James 4:17  So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.(ESV)

✒️ Forge:  Mistake or Sin? The Difference Heaven Sees

Modern believers often confuse mistakes with sin, using the terms interchangeably or softening one into the other.  But biblically, there is a crucial distinction.

A mistake is typically a failure of judgment, memory, or knowledge—a wrong turn, an overlooked task, or a misunderstood situation.  Mistakes are often unintentional and result from human limitation.

A sin, on the other hand, is a moral failure.  It is the willful or negligent disobedience to what one knows is right—either through action or inaction.  Sin is not just about doing wrong but about knowing better and doing it anyway.

The distinction matters because our response must match the root cause.  Mistakes call for correction and humility.  Sin calls for confession and repentance.  When we call sin a “mistake,” we minimize its gravity.  When we treat every mistake as sin, we fall into legalism or shame.

Jesus dealt with both—but He treated them differently.

⚒️ Anvil:  Not Every Miss is a Moral Failure

Did I forget to send the message today?  That’s a mistake—not a sin.  I didn’t rebel against God.  I didn’t ignore a command or choose selfishness.  I just…missed it.  It happens.  We’re dust (Psalm 103:14).

But if I had promised God you’d send it—felt the Spirit prompt me to send it—yet chose laziness, distraction, or rebellion instead?  That crosses into sin, because you knew better and chose not to obey.

Here’s how you test the difference:

  • Did you know what was right?
  • Did you have the power to do it?
  • Did you choose not to, even subtly?

Then it’s sin.  Otherwise, it’s a mistake—an opportunity to learn and realign.

You are not condemned for your limits, but you are accountable for your choices.

🔥 Ember:  The Accuser Exploits the Gap

There are days when it’s easy to call sin a “mistake” just to feel better about ourselves.  Other days, we beat ourselves up over honest mistakes we couldn’t have prevented.  Both are traps.

The Spirit convicts of sin, but the enemy accuses over mistakes.  One leads to healing.  The other leads to shame.

So today, I own the delay.  But I will not carry guilt for something God hasn’t charged me with.  I missed the mark, but not the mission.  And tomorrow is still open.

🌿 Covenant Triumph:  Fall Seven, Rise Eight

Proverbs 24:16  for the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity.(ESV)

God is not watching to see if you fall.  He’s watching to see if you get up.

If the delay was a mistake, get up and press forward.
If it was sin, repent, and press forward.

Either way, get up.  The story isn’t over.  Grace is real.  And your next move still matters.

Who am I?

I’ve walked a path I didn’t ask for, guided by a God I can’t ignore. I don’t wear titles well—writer, teacher, leader—they fit like borrowed armor. But I know this: I’ve bled truth onto a page, challenged what I was told to swallow, and led only because I refused to follow where I couldn’t see Christ.

I don’t see greatness in the mirror. I see someone ordinary, shaped by pain and made resilient through it. I’m not above anyone. I’m not below anyone. I’m just trying to live what I believe and document the war inside so others know they aren’t alone.

If you’re looking for polished answers, you won’t find them here.
But if you’re looking for honesty, tension, paradox, and a relentless pursuit of truth,
you’re in the right place.

If you’re unsure of what path to follow or disillusioned with the world today and are willing to walk with me along this path I follow, you’ll never be alone. Everyone is welcome and invited to participate as much as they feel comfortable with.

Now, welcome home. I’m Don.
