What Do You Do With the Ashes?

Isaiah 61:3  to grant to those who mourn in Zion—to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.(ESV)

Floatie:  When the Fire Has Already Burned

Some of you are walking through things that feel like aftermath.  The fire has already torn through your peace, and all that’s left is the ash.  You didn’t choose the fire.  You didn’t stoke it.  But you’re the one breathing in the smoke.  You’re the one left standing in the ruins.

You’re not alone.

Scripture doesn’t hide from sorrow.  It doesn’t gloss over betrayal.  It meets it head-on—and it offers something profound:  the promise that God trades ashes for beauty.

✒️ Forge:  The Biblical Pattern of Beauty Rising from Ruin

The Bible is filled with scenes that follow this exact arc:

  • Joseph was betrayed by his brothers, falsely accused, and forgotten in prison—yet God used the ashes of his story to save a nation (Genesis 50:20).
  • David was chased by the very king he served, hunted like prey by Saul, yet he became a man after God’s heart (1 Samuel 24:11–12).
  • Job lost everything—children, health, reputation—and yet said:
Job 13:15  Though he slay me, I will hope in him; yet I will argue my ways to his face.(ESV)

And of course, Jesus—the ultimate example.  Crucified unjustly.  Abandoned by those He loved.  But the ashes of Calvary became the crown of eternity.

God doesn’t erase pain.  He transforms it.

⚒️ Anvil:  Stop Trying to Make Sense of the Fire

Some of you are replaying every detail—every vote, every meeting, every betrayal—trying to make sense of what happened.  That’s human.  It’s natural.  But it won’t heal you.

You cannot logic your way out of a soul wound.

Psalm 34:18  The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.(ESV)

Don’t rush to fix it.  Don’t whitewash it.  Mourn it.  Name it.  And then surrender it.  God can handle the ashes—but only if you stop clutching them like proof of how wrong it all went.

🔥 Ember:  The God Who Sees the Whole Story

God isn’t just watching the moment you’re in.  He’s already written the page where you’re healed.  He sees the you that’s still standing.  Still singing.  Still breathing.  Still becoming who you were always meant to be—even if the path was littered with fire and rubble.

He is the God who restores.  But more than that:  He is the God who stays.
Even when the institutions fail.  Even when the leaders fall.  Even when your spiritual home goes up in flames.

He never left.
He never will.

🌿 Covenant Triumph:  Ashes Don’t Have the Final Word

There’s still beauty coming.  There’s still oil for your mourning.  There’s still a garment of praise that will fit again—when you’re ready to wear it.

You are not just the result of what you’ve survived.
You are the evidence that God is still writing redemptive stories in the middle of this mess.

Let Him finish yours.

Who am I?

I’ve walked a path I didn’t ask for, guided by a God I can’t ignore. I don’t wear titles well—writer, teacher, leader—they fit like borrowed armor. But I know this: I’ve bled truth onto a page, challenged what I was told to swallow, and led only because I refused to follow where I couldn’t see Christ.

I don’t see greatness in the mirror. I see someone ordinary, shaped by pain and made resilient through it. I’m not above anyone. I’m not below anyone. I’m just trying to live what I believe and document the war inside so others know they aren’t alone.

If you’re looking for polished answers, you won’t find them here.
But if you’re looking for honesty, tension, paradox, and a relentless pursuit of truth,
you’re in the right place.

If you’re unsure of what path to follow or disillusioned with the world today and are willing to walk with me along this path I follow, you’ll never be alone. Everyone is welcome and invited to participate as much as they feel comfortable with.

Now, welcome home. I’m Don.
