The Watchman’s Call

Floatie:  Stand Guard, Watchman

Ezekiel 33:7–9  (7)”So you, son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel.  Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me.  (8)If I say to the wicked, O wicked one, you shall surely die, and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, that wicked person shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand.  (9)But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, that person shall die in his iniquity, but you will have delivered your soul.(ESV)

The role of the watchman is not a suggestion.  It is a commission.  In Hosea’s time, God used the prophet’s own marriage to a prostitute as a living metaphor for Israel’s betrayal.  Gomer’s unfaithfulness mirrored Israel’s chasing after foreign gods and worldly pleasures.  The pain, the shame, the distance—it all pointed to the heart of God grieving over His unfaithful people.

✒️ Forge:  The Bride or the Harlot?

Hosea 3:1  And the Lord said to me, “Go again, love a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress, even as the Lord loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love cakes of raisins.”(ESV)

The modern Church stands in the same place as Gomer.  We were bought with a price—redeemed, cherished, restored.  Yet many congregations have gone after other lovers:  wealth, influence, entertainment, and comfort.

It’s easy to point fingers at the megachurches with their celebrity pastors and multimillion-dollar productions.  But the warning is bigger than that.  Every church—no matter how small—is at risk of becoming the prostitute.  The moment any fellowship places anything above Christ, the seeds of harlotry are sown.

The excuses come easy:

  • “We are just being good stewards.”
  • “We are growing the Kingdom.”
  • “We need to stay relevant to reach the lost.”

But the truth is more blunt:  greed, comfort, and self-exaltation have quietly crept into pulpits, pews, and programs.  It is not the mission of the Church to become a brand.  It is the mission of the Church to carry the cross.

⚒️ Anvil:  Sound the Alarm Before It’s Too Late

Revelation 2:4–5  (4)But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.  (5)Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first.  If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.(ESV)

The watchman warns not just the obvious offenders but all who are drifting.  It is not enough to condemn the excesses of others while ignoring the slow fade of your own fellowship.

Ask the hard questions:

  • Has the preaching softened to avoid offending?
  • Has the focus shifted from repentance to self-help or miraculous healing?
  • Has numerical growth become more important than spiritual maturity?

The prostitute is not always easy to spot.  She can wear the right clothes, say the right words, and even perform the right rituals.  But her heart is far from the Bridegroom.  This is the call:  Return to your first love.

🔥 Ember:  The Heart of God Still Redeems

Hosea 2:19–20  (19)And I will betroth you to me forever.  I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy.  (20)I will betroth you to me in faithfulness.  And you shall know the Lord.(ESV)

The mercy of God is not exhausted.  He still calls His Bride back to Himself.  The price of redemption has already been paid—Jesus went to the cross to buy back what was His.  The heart of God longs not to destroy the wayward Church but to purify her.

The Watchman’s Call is not just to condemn but to beckon:  Come home.  Wash your robes.  Return to the One who first loved you.

🌿 Covenant Triumph:  A Bride Made Ready

Revelation 19:7–8  (7)Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; (8)it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.(ESV)

The story does not end in betrayal.  It ends in restoration.  But only for those who heed the warning.  The prostitute can still become the pure Bride.  The Church can still return.

The duty of the watchman is to sound the alarm.  The duty of the Church is to listen.

Who am I?

I’ve walked a path I didn’t ask for, guided by a God I can’t ignore. I don’t wear titles well—writer, teacher, leader—they fit like borrowed armor. But I know this: I’ve bled truth onto a page, challenged what I was told to swallow, and led only because I refused to follow where I couldn’t see Christ.

I don’t see greatness in the mirror. I see someone ordinary, shaped by pain and made resilient through it. I’m not above anyone. I’m not below anyone. I’m just trying to live what I believe and document the war inside so others know they aren’t alone.

If you’re looking for polished answers, you won’t find them here.
But if you’re looking for honesty, tension, paradox, and a relentless pursuit of truth,
you’re in the right place.

If you’re unsure of what path to follow or disillusioned with the world today and are willing to walk with me along this path I follow, you’ll never be alone. Everyone is welcome and invited to participate as much as they feel comfortable with.

Now, welcome home. I’m Don.
