Forged by the Word, Part 6:  The Whisper and the Shout

1 Kings 19:12  And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.(ESV)

Floatie:  He’s Always Speaking—But Not Always Loud
Some expect God to thunder.  Others think He only whispers.  The truth?  He does both.  The problem isn’t His volume—it’s our frequency.  He’s not always loud, but He’s never silent.

✒️ Forge:  A Voice That Matches the Moment
Elijah ran to a cave expecting dramatic confirmation.  But God didn’t meet him in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire.  He came in a whisper—a sound so small it could be missed.

Yet throughout Scripture, God also shouts:

  • At Sinai, His voice shook the mountain (Exodus 19).
  • At Jesus’ baptism, the heavens were torn open (Mark 1:10–11).
  • The resurrection was heralded with an earthquake and an angel rolling a stone (Matthew 28).

God’s tone matches the moment.  He whispers to the wounded and shouts to the stubborn.  He thunders to awaken and whispers to sustain.

If we listen only for volume, we’ll miss both.

⚒️ Anvil:  Listening Isn’t the Same as Hearing
Test your hearing:

  • Do I expect God to speak in the way I prefer?
  • Have I been ignoring the whisper because I’m still waiting on the shout?
  • When God is quiet, do I assume He is absent—or do I lean in?

Spiritual maturity isn’t found in volume—it’s found in attention.  If you only respond when God raises His voice, you’re not listening.  You’re just reacting.

🔥 Ember:  The Whisper Is for the Close
I’ve learned that God often speaks loudest when I’m most still.  The times He’s shouted were not for intimacy—they were for intervention.

But the whisper?  That’s reserved for the ones close enough to hear it.  For those who don’t need fireworks to believe they’re being led.

🌿 Covenant Triumph:  One Voice, Many Tones
Whether He shouts or whispers, God always speaks for redemption.  The whisper draws near.  The shout breaks chains.

The real question isn’t, “Is God speaking?”  It’s, “Am I close enough to hear it?”

Don’t just wait for the dramatic.  Learn to treasure the quiet voice that calls you by name.

Who am I?

I’ve walked a path I didn’t ask for, guided by a God I can’t ignore. I don’t wear titles well—writer, teacher, leader—they fit like borrowed armor. But I know this: I’ve bled truth onto a page, challenged what I was told to swallow, and led only because I refused to follow where I couldn’t see Christ.

I don’t see greatness in the mirror. I see someone ordinary, shaped by pain and made resilient through it. I’m not above anyone. I’m not below anyone. I’m just trying to live what I believe and document the war inside so others know they aren’t alone.

If you’re looking for polished answers, you won’t find them here.
But if you’re looking for honesty, tension, paradox, and a relentless pursuit of truth,
you’re in the right place.

If you’re unsure of what path to follow or disillusioned with the world today and are willing to walk with me along this path I follow, you’ll never be alone. Everyone is welcome and invited to participate as much as they feel comfortable with.

Now, welcome home. I’m Don.
