Jeremiah 6:16 Thus says the Lord: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ (ESV)
Yesterday, I shared the dream.
Today, I give you the warning embedded in it:
Rest isn’t optional. But it is choosable.
In the dream, we passed several good places to stop — quiet, clean, safe — but we didn’t stop in time. Eventually, the road offered only dangerous, uncomfortable, or costly options. And by then, it wasn’t about choosing rest. It was about surviving the consequences of delay.
That’s not just a metaphor. It’s a blueprint for how burnout works.
⚒️ The Anvil: Applied Theology
Jeremiah paints a scene:
- You’re at a crossroads.
- You’re commanded to look, ask, and walk.
- And you’re promised that in doing so, you’ll find rest.
But Israel wouldn’t walk in it.
Why? Because rest is offensive to the proud. It implies need. It implies limitation. It implies trust.
They preferred movement. Action. Progress.
And so do we.
🛑 Rest Is a Command, Not a Convenience
The sabbath isn’t a suggestion.
Margin isn’t a luxury.
Quiet isn’t wasted time.
When you rest before the crash, it’s called obedience.
When you rest after the crash, it’s called recovery.
Both are grace — but only one reflects spiritual maturity.
Jesus Himself obeyed rhythms of withdrawal. He chose desolate places — not just when He was tired, but often before.
And He invited His disciples to do the same. Why? Because He knew what was coming. Ministry would never stop. Needs would never end. Crowds would never shrink. Rest had to be scheduled, not seized.
🗺️ Safe Harbors Must Be Pre-Chosen
You must decide now where you’ll stop. Not once you’re exhausted. Not once you’re desperate.
Now. While your hands still grip the wheel.
Where is your desolate place?
- A room with no noise?
- A walk with no phone?
- A night with no obligation?
- A morning with no rush?
And more importantly:
Who guards your sabbath?
If you don’t guard it, someone will take it from you.
⚓ Floatie Reminder
You cannot “gas through” a depleted battery.
Even if your calling is clear. Even if your purpose is noble. Even if your faith is strong.
Without spiritual margin, you will break, and you’ll likely break in a place that exposes those you love to danger.
Your soul is not a factory.
Your family is not cargo.
And your usefulness to God is not tied to your ability to grind.
🌱 Closing Thought
The places we stop define the paths we take.
And the rhythm of our rest determines the strength of our witness.
If Jesus rested, so must we.
And if we wait too long, we may end up in places we’d never choose, paying prices we never expected, dragging others we swore to protect.
Don’t wait for a crash.
Pick your harbor. Pull off the road. Let the Spirit restore what the grind has drained.
