Safe Harbors, Part 1: When the Warning Light Blinks

Mark 6:31 And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.”  For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.(ESV)

I almost missed a post today.

That may not seem like much, but it speaks louder than anything else I could have written. It wasn’t laziness. It wasn’t apathy. It was depletion.

The irony? I recently had a dream that all but shouted: “You need to rest — before rest is forced upon you.”

⚠️ The Dream

In the dream, I was driving with my family on a long road trip. The car was mine — unfamiliar, but clearly mine. It turned out to be a hybrid, and after getting gas, I assumed we were good to go. But then the dashboard lit up: Battery Low. Recharge Required. Breakdown Imminent. Expensive Tow Likely.

That’s an unusual amount of information for a warning light.

We kept driving, looking for a place to stop. A few good ones came and went — we missed them for one reason or another. Then the options started getting worse. Shadier. Unsafe. Places I’d never choose to stop with my family.

The message was painfully clear:

If you don’t choose your rest now, you’ll be forced to stop later — in places you’d never willingly go.

The Floatie Moment

It’s easy to think that rest is something for the weak. Or something you can do once the work is done. That’s a lie.

Jesus told His disciples to rest before they broke down. They were coming and going so much they didn’t even have time to eat. Sound familiar?

The warning light in your soul isn’t a failure. It’s not weakness. It’s mercy.

Ignoring it? That’s what’s dangerous.

🔥 My Ember Witness

I’m not writing this post from the comfort of a spiritual retreat or after a long nap. I’m writing it from the exact place the warning light came on — drained, late, and painfully aware that I’ve been running too long on fumes.

The Holy Spirit didn’t chastise me. He didn’t shame me. He warned me.

That’s grace.

What I do next…
That’s stewardship.

📍You’re Here Too, Aren’t You?

You’ve seen the signs. The irritability. The spiritual dullness. The quiet resentment. The tired body that no amount of sleep fixes.

You’ve missed good places to rest because you were too busy to see them in time. And now, the road ahead looks rough.

You don’t have to keep going like this.

Tomorrow, I’ll unpack the second half of the dream — the lesson about pre-chosen harbors and how to find them.

But for now, just hear this:

Your battery is sacred. Your margins are holy. Your soul was not made to run full throttle until collapse.

Jesus is calling you to come away and rest.
Not after the work is done.
Now. Before the crash.

Who am I?

I’ve walked a path I didn’t ask for, guided by a God I can’t ignore. I don’t wear titles well—writer, teacher, leader—they fit like borrowed armor. But I know this: I’ve bled truth onto a page, challenged what I was told to swallow, and led only because I refused to follow where I couldn’t see Christ.

I don’t see greatness in the mirror. I see someone ordinary, shaped by pain and made resilient through it. I’m not above anyone. I’m not below anyone. I’m just trying to live what I believe and document the war inside so others know they aren’t alone.

If you’re looking for polished answers, you won’t find them here.
But if you’re looking for honesty, tension, paradox, and a relentless pursuit of truth,
you’re in the right place.

If you’re unsure of what path to follow or disillusioned with the world today and are willing to walk with me along this path I follow, you’ll never be alone. Everyone is welcome and invited to participate as much as they feel comfortable with.

Now, welcome home. I’m Don.
