Eve in the Garden, Part 1: The Beginning of Deception

Floatie:  Entry Point

Genesis 3:1  Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.  He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”(ESV)

She stood in paradise—no pain, no fear, no need unmet.  She wasn’t starving for truth.  She wasn’t desperate for love.  She wasn’t trapped in sin.  Eve was in the presence of God, surrounded by glory.  And yet, that’s where the voice of deception found her.  He didn’t roar.  He didn’t threaten.  He questioned.

Genesis 3:1b   “Did God actually say…?”(ESV)

That’s how it always begins.  Not with a lie, but with a twist.  Not with denial, but with doubt.  The serpent didn’t bring a blade.  He brought a thought.  A suggestion.  A nudge.  A tone wrapped in familiarity.  And Eve—made in God’s image, walking in daily communion—was caught not by rebellion, but by reasoning.

✒️ Forge:  Theological Framework

Familiar Voices, Friendly Faces

Deception doesn’t walk into the church with horns and smoke.  It walks in with a smile, a microphone, and an invitation to reconsider truth in a more “relevant” way.

It uses:

  • Charisma over character
  • Experience over Scripture
  • Emotional resonance over eternal righteousness

Eve didn’t fall for evil.  She fell for what sounded good.

Genesis 3:6  So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.(ESV)

Today, many in the church are doing the same.  The enemy offers sermons sweetened with motivational sugar, worship experiences that stir but don’t sanctify, and teachers who say, “You can still walk with God…just maybe not that closely to His Word.”

The Subtle Drift

Satan didn’t tell Eve, “God is evil.”  He told her, “Maybe He’s just holding back.”

That’s the subtle drift:

  • From trust to suspicion
  • From obedience to options
  • From God-centered to self-curated

And the worst part?  It works best when you’re standing in a place that still looks like the Garden.

⚒️ Anvil:  Application and Challenge

Are We Still Eating?

The question today isn’t “What’s wrong with the church?”  The question is:  “Are we still eating fruit from the same tree—just with better lighting, modern music, and Bible verses attached?”

Because the serpent still speaks.  And many pulpits now echo his tone—not in heresy, but in carefully curated ambiguity.

Watchmen, Not Witch-Hunters

This message isn’t to attack pastors.  It’s not to name names.  It’s to shine light on the tactic—the pattern of deception that began in the garden and has never stopped repeating.  We’re not here to stone the deceived.  We’re here to wake the sleeping.  The serpent’s voice is still in the garden.  Sometimes, it sounds like a friend.

Colossians 2:8  See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.(ESV)

2 Corinthians 11:13  For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ.(ESV)

Galatians 5:7  You were running well.  Who hindered you from obeying the truth?(ESV)

🔥 Ember:  My Witness

My Memory of the Whisper

I’ve felt that whisper.  Not in the garden—but in worship services where the Spirit felt absent and the crowd still cheered.  I’ve watched people nod along while their hearts were being hollowed by something that sounded holy but wasn’t.  That’s not theory.  That’s memory.  And I can’t stay quiet while the same serpent keeps whispering.

The Series Begins

This is the first step—a return to the Garden not to condemn Eve, but to recognize the whispers that still lead many to destruction with their eyes wide open.  If you’ve ever felt the dissonance—if your spirit has stirred while your surroundings applauded—this series is for you.  The serpent still speaks.  But so does the Shepherd.  Make sure you know which voice you’re following.

Who am I?

I’ve walked a path I didn’t ask for, guided by a God I can’t ignore. I don’t wear titles well—writer, teacher, leader—they fit like borrowed armor. But I know this: I’ve bled truth onto a page, challenged what I was told to swallow, and led only because I refused to follow where I couldn’t see Christ.

I don’t see greatness in the mirror. I see someone ordinary, shaped by pain and made resilient through it. I’m not above anyone. I’m not below anyone. I’m just trying to live what I believe and document the war inside so others know they aren’t alone.

If you’re looking for polished answers, you won’t find them here.
But if you’re looking for honesty, tension, paradox, and a relentless pursuit of truth,
you’re in the right place.

If you’re unsure of what path to follow or disillusioned with the world today and are willing to walk with me along this path I follow, you’ll never be alone. Everyone is welcome and invited to participate as much as they feel comfortable with.

Now, welcome home. I’m Don.
