1 Samuel 16:13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.(ESV)
This probably answered a lot of questions for young David. I’m sure it created many more but, at least he knew what role he was going to play in the future of Israel. When THE prophet of God says that you are the future king, you tend to not question it.
For the rest of us……
Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.(ESV)
It’s pretty easy to feel lost in the world today. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed with the noise of the world and the sheer amount of possibilities we have. It’s easy to forget that God anointed David and others in the bible for specific moments in time, but He also has plans for our lives as well. The verse in Jeremiah 29 (“I know the plans I have for you…”) is often used to comfort people or lift them up. I think, despite the verse be very appropriate and much loved, that this verse is over used to the detriment of so many other good verses (2 Timothy 3:16-17, etc.). We forget that we can pray for wisdom (James 1:5) and guidance (John 16:13). We forget that some closed doors will open at just the right time and some opportunities will seemingly fall into our laps (Revelation 3:8, 1 Corinthian 16:9). We forget that God rarely calls the qualified, but He always qualifies the called (Romans 12:6-8, 2 Corinthians 9:8).
In these times of self-doubt, the enemy will often seek to blind us to the light and deafen us to that whisper that is the Holy Spirit in our lives. Yet, there will always be signs that we are walking in the plan we were anointed for (Romans 9:2—passion, John 15:5—fruitfulness, Philippians 1:6—endurance, and Philippians 4:7—peace amid uncertainty). We are certainly warned against moving forward with what we think is God’s plan before we know for sure (Jeremiah 23:21, Matthew 7:21-23), but if we spend time in prayer to seek God’s guidance, examine our gifts and passions, seek counsel from other trusted believers, watch for God’s provision and opportunities, and, more importantly, be willing to wait then we can be far more certain.
