Romans 12:3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.(ESV)
Balance humility with self-respect!
Biblical humility isn’t about thinking you’re worthless—it’s about accurately assessing your worth in the light of God’s grace. You are valuable, but that value comes from Him. Humility, true humility, acknowledges dependence on God while maintaining confidence in who He created you to be.
We are called to avoid the false humility that leads to self-deprecation. I personally suffer from this problem. I’m well into the self-deprecation portion of that path. To combat this, we have to set boundaries, even with ourselves, against thoughts and behaviors that devalue who we are in Christ. Each of us should strive to speak to ourselves with the same kindness and truth that we extend to a loved one.
