Throw the Lifeline

Galatians 6:1 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.(ESV)

Jude 1:22-23 (22)And have mercy on those who doubt; (23)save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.(ESV)

When someone is drowning, the most dangerous thing a rescuer can do is to swim up to them and offer to help them. Why? The person who is drowning is most likely panicking. They will try to use you to stay afloat, even if that means pushing you under. It doesn’t matter how strong of a swimmer you are if you have someone standing on your shoulders.

This is true spiritually as well. Someone who is in a self-destructive spiral may not have the ability to respond with a level head and steady heart. The urge to help them may turn you into their island refuge, which may ultimately cause you to sink as well.

Jesus is capable of getting down into the dirt and mud with us to reach us no matter where we are without getting dirty because He is rooted in the truth of our Father—His truth. He can put out a hand to any and all who call on Him because He is the source of all strength. We are not capable of prolonged battles like that. It doesn’t matter how well-trained or experienced we are, our strength will eventually run out, and our focus may lapse.

This isn’t to say that we should help. Instead, it is a warning about trying to do this kind of thing on our own. I’m regularly guilty of this and am constantly reminded of the importance of unification with the full body of Christ and having a solid support network. Whether you are fighting your own battles or trying to help a brother with theirs, take a break to rest. Honor the sabbath day to recharge, refocus, and get renewed. Helping other in their spiritual struggles is essential, but it must be done with the support of the body of Christ and full reliance on Jesus. Remember to rest and renew your strength regularly, trusting in God’s provision and timing.

Who am I?

I’ve walked a path I didn’t ask for, guided by a God I can’t ignore. I don’t wear titles well—writer, teacher, leader—they fit like borrowed armor. But I know this: I’ve bled truth onto a page, challenged what I was told to swallow, and led only because I refused to follow where I couldn’t see Christ.

I don’t see greatness in the mirror. I see someone ordinary, shaped by pain and made resilient through it. I’m not above anyone. I’m not below anyone. I’m just trying to live what I believe and document the war inside so others know they aren’t alone.

If you’re looking for polished answers, you won’t find them here.
But if you’re looking for honesty, tension, paradox, and a relentless pursuit of truth,
you’re in the right place.

If you’re unsure of what path to follow or disillusioned with the world today and are willing to walk with me along this path I follow, you’ll never be alone. Everyone is welcome and invited to participate as much as they feel comfortable with.

Now, welcome home. I’m Don.
