John 18:10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)(ESV)
This account is written about in all four of the gospels (Matthew 26:51, Mark 14:47, and Luke 22:50-51). The account of John is actually the only account to even list names. This particular story hides a huge clue about salvation that many people miss.
The attack on the servant of the high priest was punishable by death. What did Jesus do? How did He respond? He didn’t just heal the ear. He removed any evidence that there had ever been any kind of injury.
If Malchus, the servant, tried to accuse Peter of a crime there would be no evidence to support the claim.
Jesus does the same thing with our sin when we repent and turn to Him. When we stand before the throne of judgement, there will be no evidence that we were ever a sinner. All anyone will be able to see will be the blood of Christ on our lives.
Sometimes the shortest messages have the biggest impact. The true depth of this snippet hidden inside of the betrayal story reveals nearly the entire truth about salvation and the mission the Christ came to earth to fulfill.
