An Axe to Grind

The bible contains a very long list of undeniable miracles. Some of them are huge such as raising Lazarus from the dead, healing leprosy, our salvation, or even turning water to wine (because of the significance behind this miracle). Some of them are not as big. The miracle seen in the beginning of 2 Kings 6 could possibly be the smallest and most insignificant miracle in all of the bible.

2 Kings 6:5-7 (5)But as one was felling a log, his axe head fell into the water, and he cried out, “Alas, my master! It was borrowed.” (6)Then the man of God said, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, he cut off a stick and threw it in there and made the iron float. (7)And he said, “Take it up.” So he reached out his hand and took it.(ESV)

There wasn’t a major crowd of witnesses here. This wasn’t a case where a multitude would be saved through hearing about this miracle. This wasn’t even a case where any lives were at stake. No, this was simply a case of a student of the prophets losing something that was borrowed and the potential consequences of losing the axe. Not returning the axe most likely would not have caused any kind of war, famine, plague, or widespread harm.

Why is this miracles important enough to include in the bible?

This miracle shows how God is invested in our daily lives to provide provision and compassion. The supernatural way the axe floated is a reminder that God has power over even the laws of nature. This miracle is obviously a teaching moment, because it takes place in the middle of a series of other larger miracles and the works being done to prepare for those. This guy was being obedient to Elisha and faithful to God by trying to build a larger place for the group to live.

Don’t miss that part. Please do not miss that part. This unnamed guy was being obedient to God to prepare for future miracles and God made a way for that to happen. Even with our imperfection, God will make a way if we are trying to be obedient. This guy was trying to be responsible with the resources that he had been entrusted with and Elisha performed a miracle to reward that obedience.

God makes a way.

Who am I?

I’ve walked a path I didn’t ask for, guided by a God I can’t ignore. I don’t wear titles well—writer, teacher, leader—they fit like borrowed armor. But I know this: I’ve bled truth onto a page, challenged what I was told to swallow, and led only because I refused to follow where I couldn’t see Christ.

I don’t see greatness in the mirror. I see someone ordinary, shaped by pain and made resilient through it. I’m not above anyone. I’m not below anyone. I’m just trying to live what I believe and document the war inside so others know they aren’t alone.

If you’re looking for polished answers, you won’t find them here.
But if you’re looking for honesty, tension, paradox, and a relentless pursuit of truth,
you’re in the right place.

If you’re unsure of what path to follow or disillusioned with the world today and are willing to walk with me along this path I follow, you’ll never be alone. Everyone is welcome and invited to participate as much as they feel comfortable with.

Now, welcome home. I’m Don.
