Matthew 9:12 But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.”(ESV)
When I was younger, I laughed so hard at this line. I thought to myself, “That’s so Jesus”. It still gives me a chuckle, but the depth of what He was saying is just beginning to make sense to me. The church is the Bride of Christ, but it is not a building. The church is made up of people. Imperfect people with imperfect stories. Those stories might seem to be unrelated. People from different walks of life with different lifestyles and different backgrounds and different reasons for being there. Would the church exist if one of those stories wasn’t there? Sure. It wouldn’t be the same though. There will be people who have overcome sitting next to people who are still walking through it. Both are vital to the church.
No story in the church is more or less important than any other.
I’ve heard some people say that they won’t go to church because it’s full of hypocrites. No, those are broken people who are being honest about their need for help. Yes, there are a lot of sick and broken people in the church. Some of them even get up on stage and deliver a message, or email, about what it means to be beautifully broken and in need of the Healer. The Bride of Christ recognizes the need for the Groom.
I truly believe that church should be a come as you are kind of thing because none of us are perfect. If we must dress up in our best clothes to impress other people or to avoid their judgment, then we are no better than the Pharisees. If we only allow those who appear to be righteous and upstanding in our churches, then we are no better than the Pharisees. If the church hides the poor or struggling members of the church, then it has fallen to the same poison that the Pharisees enjoyed so much. If we are ashamed to be seen with those who are struggling, then we are blind to our own struggles.
I am sick. I need THE Doctor. I want to surround myself with others who know that they are sick and recognize the One who can heal them. Then I want to help those who struggle with the same things I am and have been sick with because I know He will heal them.
Hi, my name is Don. Let me introduce you to my Healer.
