This is one of those 2×4 conversations for me. I was listening to a short sermon by Pastor Joel Sikha on TikTok and he said something in the first seconds of the message that would have broke my nose if it hit any harder. He said, “We keep throwing logs. We keep throwing wood, but there’s no fire”.
What good is it to just read the bible if we aren’t going to live by it? What good does it to go to church if we aren’t going to be transformed by it? What good is it to say that we server God if we won’t actually serve? Shouldn’t we all want to always be on fire for the Lord? What does that even look like?
It doesn’t mean going to church every time the doors are open, but it can include that. It doesn’t mean reading our bibles every day, though that should be a part of it. It doesn’t mean that we have to sign up for every missions trip ever, but I do think that everyone owes it to themselves to go on at least one in their life.
Romans 12:11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.(ESV)
Colossians 3:23-24 (23)Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, (24)knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.(ESV)
The Christian walk is going to look different for everyone. I have no room to judge any other walk, but I say that we each must judge our own walk and the fruits of it to ask if we really are on fire for the Lord. There will be seasons where the flames are so high and hot that others can’t stand to be near you. There will be other seasons where the fire may be just small coals. When the fire is hot then we need big logs to maintain it. When the fire is just coals then we need smaller stuff to encourage it to grow. Throwing a huge log into coals does no good. It can actually put the fire out completely. It can also cause the log to only partially burn. Throwing small stuff into the larger fire is great because it keeps the fire going for a few seconds. It won’t sustain the fire though.
Tend to your fire.
