Exodus 14:21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.(ESV)
The children of Israel had been in captivity for around 400 years. After this many generations in slavery, it almost becomes a part of the identity. When God brought them out of this captivity, He did not mean for them to bring the captivity with them to the new land. They would have just been slaves again in a new place. No, God needed them to become free. The children of Israel kept looking back to the bondage they came out of and asking if that certainty was better than the doubt and fear that was ahead of them. They could not look forward to the peace and life that was promised to them. God called them to move to a place that He had prepared for them, but they kept looking back and ended up settling in places that were never meant for them.
These days, when people move, we have a tendency to take almost everything with us. We pack up and move on. The problem, sometimes, is that we take everything. Even the things that we need to leave behind. Carrying things that the Lord has said we need to put down when we move on can cause of to not be able to make the trip to the place He has prepared for us. This can cause us to settle for places He never intended. Sometimes, letting go of the past is the only way to have a future. Who you were is not who you will be.
