Deconstructing Eve?

Genesis 2:18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”(ESV)

Eve is described as a helper for Adam. She is built to help him with the tasks given to him by God. She alone is suited to be his helper. She was not formed from the foot of Adam so that she would become his foot stool. She was not pulled out of Adam’s head so that she should rule over him. She was pulled from his ribs. The ribs are one of the most important support structures in the human body. It protects all of the vital organs for life outside of the brain itself. The rib is under the arm to provide the ribs protection. The origin of Eve was intentional. The location is meant to show equality. She is at his side. She is a part of him. They are supposed to provide mutual support for each other.

Now, let’s take a step back. The original word for “helper” in this verse in Hebrew is “ezer”. This term is used in several places in the old testament. Every other time this word is used it describes God as the helper or source of help for humanity.

This means that God sees Himself as our helper. He views Eve as taking His role in the marriage. We don’t put God second to anything. We aren’t supposed to put Eve in a secondary position either. Jesus came as a servant and showed the disciples this when He washed their feet.

Keeping our priorities properly aligned and having a Godly structure to marriage makes a lot of the rest of our lives fall into place. If we adopt a grateful, gracious, loving, servants attitude in our daily lives where we take the back seat to what serves the kingdom best then we will see unimaginable rewards in this life and the next. If we men remember how beautiful the treasure of a Godly wife is then we magnify our ability to work for the kingdom. If women can recognize the true equality found in a Godly marriage and the self-confidence and security this brings then a lot of the imbalances we see in relationships today will vanish.

I think that a lot of the problems in the world today would be solved if we recognized this basic structure that was described in the very first book of the Bible.

Who am I?

I’ve walked a path I didn’t ask for, guided by a God I can’t ignore. I don’t wear titles well—writer, teacher, leader—they fit like borrowed armor. But I know this: I’ve bled truth onto a page, challenged what I was told to swallow, and led only because I refused to follow where I couldn’t see Christ.

I don’t see greatness in the mirror. I see someone ordinary, shaped by pain and made resilient through it. I’m not above anyone. I’m not below anyone. I’m just trying to live what I believe and document the war inside so others know they aren’t alone.

If you’re looking for polished answers, you won’t find them here.
But if you’re looking for honesty, tension, paradox, and a relentless pursuit of truth,
you’re in the right place.

If you’re unsure of what path to follow or disillusioned with the world today and are willing to walk with me along this path I follow, you’ll never be alone. Everyone is welcome and invited to participate as much as they feel comfortable with.

Now, welcome home. I’m Don.
