There are plenty of “I remember where I was standing” moments in every life. Some may be small enough to only impact one or two people, while others rock the foundations of the world.
The Kennedy assassination.
The moon landing.
The moment I first saw my wife.
Reading the college acceptance letter.
The death of a loved one.
9/11
This stirred up a hornets nest at my house. I know exactly where I was standing when I first heard the news. I remember the look on my parents faces when I told them what I had heard. Fear, panic, then grim resolve. For a while after that, the only thing that mattered was what flag you lived under. That made you family. It’s amazing to think that lifetimes of fighting and bickering over the small stuff disappeared overnight in the face of such brutal and senseless violence.
Yet, a lot of us live our daily lives without giving a second thought to the same brutality brought by our real enemy. The good news is that we know how that story ends. We know who won that fight. Remembering who the real enemy is lets us move beyond the petty differences that are used to separate us and into the loving embrace of our Lord. We welcome those who He loves as He loves them.
Romans 8:38-39 (38)For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, (39)nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.(ESV)
1 Corinthians 15:55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”(ESV)
