Psalm 139:7-12 Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? (8)If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! (9)If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, (10)even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. (11)If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” (12)even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.(ESV)
Some people might make the mistake of thinking that these verses were written by someone who is trying to hide from the Lord. The truth is that this is a song of praise and worship from someone who recognizes the peace that comes from knowing that we are never alone. Celebrate the fact that our Father loves us so much that He doesn’t want to have any distance between us.
This psalm has so much in it. The writer acknowledges that God is everywhere and knows everything. More importantly, the writer sees how intimate His relationship with us is. It’s so that no matter where we go or what we are doing, He is there wanting to guide and protect us. Most importantly, perhaps, is recognizing that light and darkness do exist.
Darkness has no substance. It has no power. Darkness is not a thing. It is, in fact, the lack of a thing, light. Since darkness has no substance, it has no power. When the light is dimmed it because something is blocking the light. Shadows exist because of something between a given point and the source of light. This absence of light distorts our perception of truth and that is where the darkness gets power. Fortunately, we have a loving Father who sees all even in complete darkness and wants to guide us back to His holy light.
