After the crossing of the Jordan and a lot of walking, the nation of Israel finally makes it to the promised land. Moses sends out spies to look at what the land has to offer. Take a look at the report that the spies returned in Numbers 13.
Numbers 13:33 And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.(ESV)
Read that again. “so we seemed to them”. How did they know that the inhabitants they found thought that the spies we like grasshoppers? Did they find a few of them and ask them over coffee?
This is actually answered in the book of Joshua when the two spies stayed with Rahab.
Joshua 2:8-10 (8)Before the men lay down, she came up to them on the roof (9)and said to the men, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. (10)For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction.(ESV)
Rahab said, “the fear of you has fallen upon us”. She said, “everyone here is living in fear because we know you are going to win”.
The Battle of Jericho was the first battle to take the promised land. What happened? They walked around the city, blew horns, walls fell, and it was over. The battle was won. This battle took place years after the spies returned. That first battle was delayed for years because the people of Israel believed the lie in Numbers.
Remember, the enemy doesn’t need us to believe every lie. He only needs us to believe one lie and make that a part of who we are. When the Lord promises us something, He will make a way. All we have to do it to trust Him. Don’t let the enemy delay your blessing by believing the lies he tells you. Write His truth on your heart and live free of that bondage.
