Mark 6 gives us another account of Jesus walking on water. Most messages on this part come from Matthew to show Peter losing site of what matters most. Mark 6 moves right past that and doesn’t even mention it. It actually gives a completely different view of this event.
Mark 6:48-52 (48)And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them, (49)but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out, (50)for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” (51)And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, (52)for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.(ESV)
“He meant to pass them by”. He was not going to stop. He saw them struggling, but He was going to just keep going. Why? The plan had not changed. He told them to take the boat and he would meet them on the other side. The storm wasn’t a surprise for Jesus. He knew it was going to come. He knew the circumstances that the disciples would find themselves in. He knew of the struggles they were about to face. He watched them. He saw them in their struggles.
He also didn’t turn to them until they saw him through the storm. So, remember that He sees us where we are and in the season we are in. No matter how bad the storm gets, if we call on Him, He will come into the boat with us, calm the storm, and give us peace.
