There are only two people who we know walked on water. Jesus and Peter. It took a lot of faith for Peter to get out of that boat. So why did Jesus say he had little faith when he began to sink?
Matthew 14:28-31 (28)And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” (29)He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. (30)But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” (31)Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”(ESV)
Google the definition of little and find that it, like most words, can have multiple meanings. We all know that it can mean a tiny amount. Yet, we also know that the faith of a mustard seed can move a mountain (Matthew 17:20). So, this isn’t a question of the amount of faith. One other meaning of little is short in time or distance.
Peter had all the faith in the world, but it didn’t last long. It had no endurance. The faith the size of a mustard seed CAN move a mountain, but only if it lasts long enough to see it done. When we ask the Father for anything in Jesus name we will be given one of three answers: yes, no, and not yet. Most people don’t have enough endurance for the not yet. Moses and Abraham had to wait a really long time for their not yet. Remember, the real work is done in the waiting.
